Before choosing what, your new kitchen will look like, it’s worth spending some time thinking about how you want it to work. At Kitchen Concepts, some of the most important conversations we have with homeowners happen before a cabinet style or countertop sample ever enters the picture.

Here are some of the questions worth considering first.

What’s Not Working in Your Kitchen Now?

Sometimes it’s easier to start with what you don’t like. Maybe there isn’t enough counter space. Perhaps two people can’t comfortably cook at the same time. Your cabinets may provide plenty of storage on paper, but half of it is difficult to reach. Or maybe the kitchen simply feels cut off from the rest of your home. Pay attention to those everyday frustrations. They’re valuable clues about what your new kitchen needs to do differently.

How Do You Really Use Your Kitchen?

There’s no single “right” kitchen layout because there isn’t one way people use their kitchens.

Do you cook most nights?
Does more than one person usually prepare meals?
Do friends and family tend to gather in the kitchen?
Do you need a place for kids or grandkids to sit?
Are you a baker who needs room for equipment and ingredients—or someone who would rather keep small appliances tucked out of sight?

“More storage” is one of the most common requests we hear. But more cabinets don’t automatically mean better storage. The real question is: What do you need to store?

Pots and pans require different solutions than baking supplies. Small appliances need different space than dishes. Pantry items, recycling, spices, utensils and oversized cookware all have their own storage challenges.

Features such as deep drawers, roll-out shelves, specialized corner storage, appliance garages, and integrated waste and recycling can make existing square footage work much harder. This is why it’s helpful to think about what needs a home before deciding where all the cabinets should go.

One of the biggest opportunities in a kitchen remodel may have nothing to do with finishes. It’s the layout. Moving an appliance, changing a peninsula, adding—or removing—an island, opening a wall, or simply reconsidering how people move through the room can dramatically change how a kitchen functions.

Features such as accessible storage, comfortable walkways, good lighting, easy-to-use drawers, and thoughtful appliance placement can become increasingly valuable over time. Good kitchen design doesn’t just solve today’s problems. Whenever possible, it anticipates tomorrow’s needs too.

This may be the most important thing to know before starting a kitchen remodel: You don’t need to arrive with all the answers. In fact, we’d rather you didn’t feel like you have to.
